Images of ‘Tuning In’ a work in progress installation at Sunspot event space in Jaywick last weekend. This was part of Jaywick Open where 6 artists presented WIP work (performance, sound, painting, installation)
.
.
Tuning In is an experiment to explore ideas about listening, beginning with footage of a pebble being thrown into the sea from a 1940s educational film about the ear and how the body listens.

As an artist not from this place, I let the work unfold through conversations, observations, and chance encounters along the shoreline.

Using a handmade cardboard camera obscura, (which I discovered was a fantastic conversation starter object) expired 1940s photographic paper and found materials, I created images shaped by the place and the people I met.

This installation brings together camera obscura footage, animated lumen prints, archival film, field recordings, a soundtrack created by James Kirby (thank you!) and the camera obscuras themselves—traces of a work still in progress.

Jaywick beach and caravan studio - making lumens using expired photographic paper from 1940’s. Then photographing/scanning and attempting fixing with sea water and salt solution. These may be processed in some way for the film. Making lumens, like the camera obscura provoked encounters and conversations too.

(thanks @melaniekatking for the recipe for fixing I found on YouTube - variable success but I’ll keep trying….)

Been spending time in Jaywick, Essex, this week on a residency/commission. Finding myself filming again with my cardboard Camera Obscura - driven my people’s interest in it and the way it seems to open up conversations.

A dreamy moving imaging installation emerging ready for Jaywick Open next week. I’ll be working on somehow translating and combining this week’s experience including a varied collection of moving images, conversations remembered and reflected, a 1940’s archive film about the science of listening, comings and goings, circular and triangular motifs and lumens made using local beach wrack and coastal vegetation on expired 1940’s photographic paper.

Two short clips from ‘Son of Liverpool’, a film I made in 2012 with and about the late painter, John Kirby which is being shown this month at Flowers Gallery alongside the first exhibition of his work since his death almost a year ago.

The film was originally commissioned for his retrospective exhibition at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The film is a meandering conversation with John as he prepares for his retrospective exhibition in Liverpool, reflecting on his childhood, his reasons for leaving the city at 16, finding his way to art school in his 30’s via social work and a stint with Mother Teresa.

I loved making this film with John and revisiting it again brought back the wonderful time I spent with him at his home, studio and in Liverpool. It was a return for me too as I was born in Liverpool. Looking at the footage again brought back stories he told me (that didn’t make it into the film) and memories of our time - his mother’s hand made costumes and vaudeville performances, him finding a 1950’s diary in a skip and making an exhibition with fellow artist friends in response to it and us singing Peggy Lee’s ‘Is that all there is?’ together in the lift leaving his studio.

John, loved and missed, was also a family friend, being the uncle of my partner Jim, who also made the music for the film.

I’ll add a link to the full film in bio

📌 John Kirby: Boy runs 19 March – 18 April 2026 at Flowers, 21 Cork Street, London W1

Flowers Gallery text:
John Kirby: Boy marks the Gallery’s first exhibition of Kirby’s work since his passing last year, offering a reflection on the artist’s singular voice within contemporary painting. Centred on ‘Boy’ (2013), a painting that resonates with Kirby’s sustained exploration of identity, vulnerability, and the ambiguities of the self, the exhibition presents a selection of key pieces drawn from across his remarkable career.

The @royalphilorchestra have commissioned me to make a series of films which will be projected alongside the live orchestra in their Relaxed Performance series touring this year.

Reviewing footage from a workshop that I will be weaving together along with some new responses and edits for my current Royal Philharmonic Orchestra commission.

It was a really fun workshop experimenting with shadow play and animations with pupils at Manor School, Brent working in response to 3 brilliant Royal Philharmonic Orchestra musicians (violin, cello and trumpet)

Manor school specialises in providing tailored education for pupils with diverse needs, including Autism and severe/complex learning difficulties. I have been commissioned by @royalphilorchestra to make a series of films which will be projected alongside the live orchestra in their Relaxed Performance series. Some of the films are co-created and it is hoped that the pupils will come along to the Relaxed Performances to see their film.

Some of the images, material and documentation created during a workshop for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Brent Mencap.

We worked in different ways in response to 3 fantastic musicians (cello, violin and flute) and the day ended with a playful improvised performative installtion of projections, conducting and pulling the giant acetate film reel we made through OHPs to live trio of musicians.

I will be developing and building on some of the material created to make a co-created film which will be projected alongside the live orchestra in their Relaxed Performance series.

I’m really happy to say I’m working with The Royal Philharmonic orchestra again this year (into next). They have commissioned me to make a series of films which will be projected alongside the live orchestra in their Relaxed Performance series.

This year I’m co-creating some of the films via some inclusive workshops with groups local to the first performance which will be at Brent Civic Centre next year.

First up I’ll be working with Brent Mencap. Part of the process of developing ideas for the films and workshops involve a kind of ‘laboratory’ moment where I’m cooking up ideas often turning my home upside down testing things out and playing around until I work out what I might want to do. Captured a bit of that here… more to come.. (this isn’t the music I’m working with)
