STATIC

STATIC is a 360 video work made in collaboration with Sarah Cole and funded by The Arts Council of England and a-n bursary with additional support from People Untied.

Soundtrack by Isa Suarez

Performers: Lilian Mae Deans Allison and Susan Merrick

Developed during lockdown 2020 and made via a residency and support from Fusebox, Wired Sussex.

As social arts practitioners, Cole & Joslin's approach is to explore lived experience with others, using the workshop format to explore processes of play, material experimentation and performativity, to generate a shared vocabulary and co-authored outcomes. STATIC is a development of their work Messy Business, made with survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, resulting from a year of weekly meetings, leading to activities that included plate smashing, singing, shouting through a loud hailer and jumping out of an aeroplane. The group, all women over 40, said that the art project was “better than therapy” and have stayed in touch with us over the past few years and collaborated with us as consultants for STATIC.

STATIC is a 360 video that can be watched on a phone, tablet or VR headset. Made during covid, the work carries the energy and ideas of the women from Messy Business but is set within an isolated domestic space where the viewer experiences a shift in scale, focus and sense of place. Working with a BSL performer and dancer, we have begun to consider the role of movement (filmic, symbolic, metaphorical and literal) as a way to consider what it means to be a woman when options and agency may feel limited.

STATIC is a 360 film, made during 2020/21. It is a short immersive experience, navigated by the viewer, that you can watch on your phone, tablet, computer or VR headset.
